This Process Works Best With XP.

iTunes: 7.7.1.11 to 9.2
iPhone Software:2.0.1 to 4.0

Copy and paste these links into your web browser:
Audacity:

lame_enc.dll:

Process:
1. Download and extract the Audacity file
2. In Audacity, Select Project; Import Audio. (It's best to use music from a CD. Audacity will not use protected music.)
3. Trim your song down (30 Seconds or less).
4. Go to File Export as mp3.
5. Audacity will want you to find the lame_enc.dll file.
6. Once it is exported, put the song into your iTunes music library.
7. Right click on the song and select "Convert Selection to AAC"
8. Once converted, right click on the the converted song and select copy.
9. Paste it to the Desktop.
10. Once Copied, right click on the song and select rename.
11. Change the .m4a to .m4r
12. A box will come up and say are you sure that you want to chang the file? YES.
13. Once converted, drag and drop into iTunes in the Ringtones Library.
14. From the Ringtones library, drag and drop the ringtone into your iPhone.

Problems? Do This And Try The Process Over Again:My Computer,Control Panel,Folder Options,View,UNcheck Hide Extensions For Known File Types

This is a video of the 39 second _.m4r ringtone for the iPhone. To install to your iPhone, download it and double click on it. It will bring up iTunes and install as a ringtone. Then, simply sync your iPhone.

The MP3 version is for all other phones that support MP3 ringtones. A 59 second version is also available and was actually the original version but iPhones AFAIK can only go up to 40 seconds.

This video is a tutorial on how to get ringtones on your iphone for free using only itunes. I am using iTunes 8.2.1 the latest version. I have also tried it on previous versions and it still works.

1-Trim song to less than 40 seconds.
2-Create AAC version
3-Change extension from .m4a to .m4r
4-Drag new .m4r AAC file into ringtones in itunes, & enjoy.
